Just another day inside my room where nothing really happens.
"Oh?" Curiously, I clicked on the button to reveal the new comment I got on my new novel. "A fiction only the author could love?" I read the comment out loud, expecting to see something positive.
"Just great..." Safe to say that my writing was nowhere close to being perfect. But did they really have to be so rude?
"Hah...." I turned off the computer and went to bed, even though it was only 7 pm.
With my earbuds in, I listened to my favorite songs, completely ignoring the outside world.
I have no parents, no dreams, and no hope for a brighter future. I tried getting help, but the psychiatrist didn't understand me at all.
I clicked my tongue at the old memory. Even I could've done a better job! And that charlatan dared to ask 200 bucks for it? Simply deplorable!
But oh well, what could a little girl like me expect from this world? A tear slipped down my cheek at the ridiculous thought.
I kept calling myself a little girl, despite having turned seventeen earlier that month. Not that there was anyone around to celebrate with me. Not that I wanted them to.
It really was pathetic.
But now that I thought about it, was there really any point in life?
The psychiatrist called me stupid when I cussed him out. He even told me that death was the thing that brought value to life. But what kind of value is that?
I simply couldn't understand him. If anything, I would've loved to live forever. Maybe then, I would have a reason to keep living... or no choice in the matter. But it's still better than dying!
Letting out a tired sigh, I got out of bed and put on the darkest coat I could find. I got so mad reliving that day with the psychiatrist that I wanted to do something that would prove him wrong.
I spent hours walking around the dark city. I even dropped some coins into that homeless man's cup. It was a foolish thing to do. But even if my life had no meaning, that didn't make it the same for everyone else. But...
I was starting to get some second thoughts on it because of that old man. He was homeless, living on the cold streets with only a blanket to keep him warm. And yet here I was, going off to do something that could never be undone.
I kind of felt embarrassed, but it's not like he knows me. To be honest, no one who knew me is alive anymore.
I paused the grand speech inside my head as I arrived at the tallest building in the city, which also happened to be the most unguarded one.
Taking a few moments to find the metal ladder, I looked around to see if there was anyone nearby. Luckily, the only person in sight was the homeless man, but he was pretty far away.
Letting out a relieved sigh, I began to climb up the cold ladder, avoiding the view below me like a curse.
It didn't take me too long to climb to the top, but it did leave me out of breath.
"Fuck..." I muttered between breaths, supporting my body by putting my hands on my knees. "That was... difficult."
Since a little girl like me managed to climb such a great height, I'd say it was pretty easy.
"Hehe... even now... I try to preserve my pride," I said with a few tears falling down while being in the most pitiful state I've ever been.
Wiping the tears away, I stepped closer to the edge. "Chances are... no. It doesn't matter. It's either I die and find out something interesting...or..." I couldn't even finish what I was saying because the passing wind had grown so strong that it pushed me off of the ledge.
"This feels..." Again, I was interrupted before I could say anything. Only this time, it wasn't the wind.
Thwack!
The impact was so brutal that it left a mangled mess of a body behind. The black hair that I once took so much pride in was nowhere to be seen, hidden behind the grotesque mess of a body.
Luckily, I couldn't feel anything the moment my body touched the ground.
After an unknown amount of time had passed, I opened my eyes again. But instead of the pearly gates, or the gates of hell, I saw a single lamp hovering above my body, which was strapped to a very cold table.
The situation was so confusing that all I could do was stare at the ceiling. Yet I couldn't help but grow anxious as the silent room only grew more and more creepy.
"Hello?" I said, trying to get someone's attention. However, instead of a reply, I heard footsteps approaching me. Then, I heard someone open a door.
"Which one is this?" I heard a male voice in front of me. Sadly, I couldn't see him, but from the sound of the footsteps, I knew there were more people in the room.
"Subject 49." I heard a cold female voice to my left.
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Since when was she here? I couldn't know for sure if that person was here from the very beginning, but I'm certain no one walked closer to me.
"Let's begin. There is a lot more to go through today." The woman walked behind me.
When she finally stepped into my field of vision, I got a good look at her. She was a woman in her late twenties with a very cold look on her face, perhaps even colder than the metal table I was strapped to. She had dark brown hair and hazel eyes.
"Where am I?" I asked, trying to maintain my calm as they began to surround me.
The woman said nothing and continued picking things up from the table behind my head. But I could still hear the metal clattering against metal.
Oh God... don't tell me. The moment I realized what this was, my heart began to beat rapidly.
"Hey... what are you doing?" I tried to squirm out of the restraints, but they bound my body so tightly that there was barely any room to move.
The woman's gaze shifted to me for a brief moment. She looked at me as though I was a bug she injected with poison to test whether I would die for her own amusement. But there was no poison. Instead, I saw her pick up a hammer with a bloodied handle.
"Lady Hana... could we skip this one quickly? The list of subjects is simply too big." One of the people following her said.
"Hmm..." She shifted her gaze to me again. "Carry on without me. I'll finish this myself."
I couldn't see what they did before leaving, but definitely heard them pause before leaving and close the door behind.
"Hey... what's the hammer for?" I said, shaking from the cold.
"Hmm... How are you able to speak?" The woman came closer to my face, opening my eyes wider with her fingers. "You shouldn't be able to move..." Her gaze shifted to my fingers.
Without any warning, I saw her move closer to my palm. Then, the hammer rose.
"Wait, wait, wait!"
Thwack!
"Agh!" I screamed in pain, with tears coming down my face. "It... hurts..." I said between sobs, trying to plead with her.
But the cold woman paid no heed to my words. She grabbed my destroyed palm and began to spread the open wound, making me scream even more.
"Gaah! Stop! Please..." Again, I tried to plead with her, but she didn't even look at me.
What was her problem? I couldn't even get a response from that cold bitch! But as if that wasn't enough, she made me feel even more pain! I would expect more kindness from a grizzly bear than this wench.
"Ow! Stop that!" I tried to move the hand out of the way, but only managed to make the pain worse. "Ai!"
But after a few seconds, I began to feel something strange in my left palm. The pain had started to grow weaker! Unfortunately for me, the cold bitch saw something happening to my arm!
"Finally..." she whispered with a crazed smile on her face.
Since I was still gritting my teeth from all the pain, I couldn't curse at her. All I could do was glare at her with hatred burning in my eyes.
The woman, though, didn't seem bothered by it at all. "I knew you were different." She undid the straps binding my head and cupped my face. "You poor thing... I actually feel bad for you... only a little, though." She looked at me with a smile like I was some fucking jewel for her collection. Though I must admit, I'd rather be her pet than suffer that pain again.
"What...?" I muttered as she undid the bindings.
I looked at my perfectly healthy hand with stains of blood. "What happened to me?" I asked my captor with a sheepish smile on my face.
If that bitch strikes me again, I'll bite her hand like a dog! Or not... I don't want to anger her.
The woman gently picked me up from the table in a princess carry position. I wanted to ask what she was doing, but I simply couldn't find the courage to speak. After all, she was a crazy lunatic who would smash someone's hand with a hammer!
Quietly, she peeked her head out the door and walked out.
Now that I could see my pitiful state in all of its glory, I tried to make sense of what had happened.
I shouldn't be here.
I knew that this place was different, but different how? It couldn't be my old world now, could it? And my appearance had changed! Instead, I had golden hair.
I wanted to complain about it, but who cared? What the heck was I supposed to do, tell the woman who smashed my hand with a hammer that I missed my black hair? Though I don't really like this, I'd like to live longer than a fly to figure out what was happening.
The crazy wench carried me through the corridor that led to the cave's exit. To my absolute shock, this place that looked like an old laboratory was no more than a cave! Worst of all, it was nighttime.
"Shit," she muttered, halting just a few meters away from the cave's entrance.
"W-what's wrong?" I asked, trying to not shiver so much.
Again, she completely ignored me.
Without a glance at me, she walked towards the forest that was near the cave. But there was this feeling that she was afraid of something. It would explain why she was looking around every five seconds.
Perhaps it was for a good reason because in the next moment, someone appeared in front of us.
It was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in my entire life. She wore a dark, elegant dress that covered half of her thighs. She was taller than the woman carrying me, but the most striking part of her was her hair. She had pure white hair and red eyes that shone brightly in the night.
I don't care what kind of monster you are, just take me! I thought sarcastically. Even if she was the most beautiful, elegant, and kind, I'd want to have a choice in the matter.
"What are you..." Hana narrowed her eyes at the strange figure appearing out of the darkness.
"Wouldn't you like to know..." She looked at me and smiled! "Wench."
Eh... she's not calling me that, is she?
With a deep frown on her wretched face, Hana dropped me to the side and pulled out a sword out of nowhere.
I swear that it just appeared. She didn't even have a sheath for it!
But fuck all that. Those two were about to fight! I have never felt this excited in my life!
Hana dropped to the floor before she could take a single step forward.
Eh? What the hell happened? I scrambled back to my feet, standing with a puzzled look.
"Is it over?" I asked, directing my gaze at the woman.
She looked at me with a raised eyebrow. "It is... but why are you still here?"
What else was I supposed to do, run?
"Not to be rude... but you could probably catch me in a heartbeat, so I don't see any point in running." I scratched the top of my head as I did my best to avoid her gaze. Gosh... I've never felt so embarrassed.
"When did I say that I was going to chase you?" she said while tilting her head to the side.
"Well... I don't really have a place to return to..." At this point, I was running out of excuses, but they were kind of true. I really didn't have a place to return to.
"Oh my... that does sound complicated." The vampire began to walk towards me with a smile on her face. "But how did you get into that place? I'd imagine you had to be at least a promising individual... yet you seem completely weak." She ruffled my hair the moment she reached me, but her words were a bit harsh.
"Don't know what kind of promising individuals they were looking for, but..." I managed a sheepish smile. "I doubt they're going to be alive after they're done with the examination."
"What makes you say that?" It looked like she asked me a question she knew the answer to, but I chose to entertain her anyway.
"Well... the moment I woke up that cold... woman smashed my palm with a hammer. Look!" I stretched out my hand, only to realize my mistake after I did it.
"Oh? Do tell... why is it that your hand is without a scratch, then?"
