Izuno’s back was turned to the main guard post, his hand resting reassuringly on Bobo’s shoulder as he guided the chubby recruit toward the safety of the dark corridor. Cold sweat beaded thickly at the base of his neck. Every instinct screamed at him to move faster, to slip into the shadows before anyone noticed the color draining entirely from his face.
Behind them, one of the boys who had just granted permission for the reassessment suddenly brightened, spotting the newcomer stepping out from the side door.
"Hey, Asaki!" the guard called out eagerly, waving a hand. "Thought you guys ran into some dangerous trouble out there!"
The guard jogged forward to meet him, brimming with casual enthusiasm. "Man, I was just talking to Izuno a second ago. Asked him what happened to your squad, and he said everything's totally fine"
Asaki stopped dead in his tracks. At the mention of the name, his eyes flashed with sharp, violent suspicion. "Wait. You said Izuno is here?"
The guard blinked, pointing a thumb backward. "Yeah, He's right over"
Before he could finish, Asaki’s face twisted into an expression of pure, murderous rage. He shoved the guard violently out of his path, his hand instantly darting to his belt to rip a gleaming knife into the open air.
"DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY!" Asaki roared, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "IZUNO IS WORKING WITH THE ENEMY!"
The warning shot through the chamber like lightning.
"Bobo, run!" Izuno yelled, his voice cracking.
Bobo blinked, panic seizing him. "Huh?!"
"Just run!" Izuno shoved him forward, sprinting desperately toward the dark exit ahead of them.
Bobo scrambled, his feet flying as he bolted into the pitch-black threshold of the corridor. But before he could take three steps, his face collided headfirst with something startlingly solid yet strangely soft.
Thud.
Bobo let out a startled yelp, tumbling backward and landing hard on his rear end. Groaning, he rubbed his forehead, his fingers coming away as his eyes rolled upward to see what he had just run into.
"What the hell...?" Bobo muttered, blinking up through the gloom. His jaw went slack. "Wait... a lady?"
From the shadows of the escape route, a figure stepped forward into the dim amber light.
Asaki sprinted closer, pointing a furious finger toward the newcomer. "Susie! Block the path! Don't let them get away!"
Susie stepped out of the dark, her expression carved from ice. She cast a single, withering glare down at Bobo, who was still nursing his head on the stone floor. Then, her cold, unblinking eyes shifted upward, fixing entirely on Izuno.
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Izuno froze. His knees buckled instantly beneath him, his shaking legs giving out as he collapsed hard onto the floor, paralyzed by a spike of absolute, primal terror. Out of everyone in the entire territory they could have possibly run into...it had to be her.
Asaki tore across the remaining distance, closing in behind them.
Susie took a slow, deliberate step forward, looking down at the two terrified figures trapped at her feet. Her voice cut through the silence like a razor.
"You two," she commanded, her eyes locked on them with lethal intent. "UP NOW!"

Up on the dark balcony...
Panic gripped the shadows. Kairo lost his composure entirely, his voice cracking as he stared down at the trap closing in below. "Oh no... no, no, this is really bad!"
Beside him, Benji reached out and grabbed Kairo’s arm, his grip tight. "Kairo... Try and stay calm"
Kairo’s eyes flicked down to the hand clutching his arm. He noticed Benji’s hand was trembling violently too.
Benji swallowed hard, shoving his glasses back up the bridge of his nose as he frantically tried to claw back a shred of composure. "Times like this, we have to try not to act... irrational."
"Rational?!" Kairo stared at him, bewildered and infuriated. "They're literally getting caught down there!"
"I know, Kairo, I know!" Benji whispered fiercely, his tone dropping into a steady, analytical hum even as sweat beaded on his forehead. "My point is that the parameters of our operation have completely shifted. We are walking right into the enemy's web, which puts us at an absolute tactical disadvantage.
Remember, our primary objective was to secure the map, but the rescue directive altered the mission profile. If we force it now, not only are we going to get caught, but we'll risk the chance of losing the map and Bobo as well."
Kairo stared at him, his face exhausted and strained as his brain scrambled to process the cold logistics through a haze of pure adrenaline.
Benji pushed his glasses up once more, his voice dropping lower. "Furthermore, we don't know the full extent of their manpower. It would be a catastrophic waste of intelligence for the rest of our group if we throw all that knowledge away here without sharing what we've learned and re-strategizing"
Kairo stared at him in deadpan silence for a long moment. His voice came out flat, entirely devoid of heat. "You know, Benji... every time you push those glasses up, you try to make some senses.... And I try to understand what you're saying. But the more you try to make sense, the more you sound like a scaredy-chicken."
Benji blinked, taken aback, his eyes widening in sheer offense. "Hey! What's that supposed to?"
Before he could finish, Kairo stood straight up on his feet, looking down at Benji with a hard, resolute glare. "If you're scared, fine. That's one thing. But when you use that as an excuse to abandon your friends.... That makes you a pretty terrible friend."
Without waiting for a response, Kairo turned away, his eyes scanning the balcony before dropping to the floor. Right beside him sat the small supply bag Izuno had left behind.
Kairo dropped to his knees, ripping the bag open. Small items spilled out across the stone.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing?!" Benji hissed, his voice shaking as he looked frantically around the chamber.
"There," Kairo whispered.
His hand closed a standard-issue tactical smoke bomb. Pulling it out into the dim light, he stood up, looking back down at Benji with a calm, hardened resolve. "If you're staying, fine. But watch my back from up here."
Benji’s face broke out in a heavy, anxious sweat, paralyzed by the sheer recklessness of what Kairo was about to attempt.
Ignoring him, Kairo grabbed a length of sturdy rope from Izuno’s scattered gear. With quick, practiced motions, he lashed one end securely around a thick arch-pillar, tying the other tightly around his waist to rig a makeshift rappel line.
He stepped up to the edge of the high balcony, staring down at the chaos unfolding below. Taking one deep, lung-filling breath to steady his racing heart, he gripped the smoke bomb tightly in his hand and braced himself for the drop.
