Hidden deep in the shadows of the towering balcony pillars, Kairo, Benji, and Izuno peered down at the scene unfolding below. A few paces beneath them, the newly recruited participants sat crowded together on the cold stone floor. Squinting through the dim light, Kairo spotted Bobo among the group, looking as uneasy as the rest of them.
Kairo turned to Izuno, his voice a low whisper. "Now what? Why are the new recruits just sitting down there doing nothing?"
Izuno kept his eyes locked on the floor below. "They're waiting to be moved to the territory's main monument. Harumachi is going to assign roles to each of them personally."
Kairo frowned, his brow furrowing. "Assigned? What do you mean?"
"Harumachi is planning to claim territories across every region," Izuno explained, his tone grim. "Every single recruit has a part to play in his strategy."
Izuno raised a hand, pointing a finger toward the far side of the chamber. "Down there, on the right, there's a side door. That passage leads straight to the main monument. I'm certain that's where Harumachi is and that's where the map will be."
He paused, glancing back at Kairo. "If you're planning to rescue your friend from that group down there, it's going to be nearly impossible. Just getting close to that entrance is a suicide mission."
Kairo let out a quiet breath, running a hand over the back of his neck. "Yeah, I know. But do we even have a choice?" He knew as well as anyone that slipping past the guards and down that corridor without being spotted was a pipe dream.
Beside them, Benji reached up and pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. The sharp glint in his eyes instantly caught both Kairo and Izuno's attention.
As they turned expectantly in his direction, Benji adjusted his frames, his analytical mind already calculating the variables. "Realistically, brute-forcing our way through is an impossible task.
The probability of blowing our cover and getting cornered is sitting dangerously near one hundred percent."
Kairo let out a tight breath, shaking his head. "Yeah, we know. But we need a strategy."
"And that," Benji replied smoothly, "is why we evaluate our parameters." He raised two fingers, ticking them off as he laid out the cold logistics. "From my perspective, we are restricted to two distinct courses of action.
Option one: a full-scale guerrilla assault. Option two: a controlled diversion, a tactical disruption designed to thin out the perimeter, clear the corridor, and secure your friend in one coordinated sweep."
Izuno leaned in, his eyes narrowing as he weighed the odds. "It makes sense, but do you actually have a workable execution plan?"
Benji pointed down toward the chamber floor. "Look closer. There are only four Harumachi boys left in that sector. Two are guarding the monument threshold, and two are managing the recruits. Numerically speaking, we are only one man short of a clean one-on-one matchup across the board."
Kairo shot Benji a sideways glance, a dry look crossing his face. "He's talking like he can go for a matchup if that happens."
"Which means," Benji continued, unbothered by the look, "option two is our only viable vector."
Izuno stared down at the stone floor, exhaling a heavy breath as the math added up. "That... actually makes sense." He looked back up, his brow furrowing. "So, who plays the diversion?"
Benji didn't hesitate. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, a confident, knowing smile playing on his lips as his gaze drifted directly to Izuno.
Izuno froze. The moment he caught Benji's expression, realization struck like cold water. "Wait... you don't mean..." He pointed a finger at his own chest.
"It’s the only logical play," Benji reasoned smoothly. "As far as they know, you're still one of Harumachi's own. You haven't been flagged as a traitor yet. You can walk right into their line of sight without triggering an immediate state-wide lockdown."

"Furthermore, as the architect of this tactical blueprint," Benji added, adjusting his frames with clinical precision, "my exclusion from the active fieldwork is a statistical necessity."
Kairo glared at him, his brow furrowing as he threw his hands up in utter confusion. "What the hell does that even mean?"
Benji simply crossed his arms, offering a smug, confident smile back at Kairo.
Izuno let his head drop, staring at the floor with a defeated sigh. He knew Benji was right, leaving him with no choice to argue against the inevitable.
"Hold on," Kairo interrupted, shaking his head. "We need to get Bobo out of there first before we make any moves."
Izuno and Benji exchanged a quick glance. Benji turned back to Kairo, giving a sharp nod. "Right. Here’s the plan...."

Down on the stone floor of the chamber....
The four Harumachi enforcers maintained their positions. Two stood rigidly near the heavy side door leading to the main monument, while the other two kept a lazy, watchful eye on the cluster of new recruits huddled on the ground.
Rustle.
A noise broke the quiet from the dim perimeter. One of the boys snapped his head around, instantly raising his guard as he barked into the shadows, "Who's there?!"
Stepping smoothly out from the darkness, Izuno offered a relaxed, easygoing smile, raising one hand in a casual greeting. "Relax, it's just me."
The guard lowered his weapon slightly, recognition crossing his face. "Oh. It's you, Izuno."
Another boy stepped closer, eyeing him with a hint of concern. "Wait, are you okay? Word has been going around that your whole squad hasn't checked back in since you were deployed."
Izuno forced a light, dismissive chuckle, waving a hand to play it off. "No, no, everything's fine. Nothing to worry about."
"If you say so," the guard replied, crossing his arms. "Well, what do you want? We've all got our assigned posts to manage."
Izuno took a few measured steps forward, putting on a confident front. "I was given a direct order to pull one of the recruits for a personal reassessment."
The guards blinked, exchanging confused looks. "A reassessment? What do you mean? We already processed and categorized all of them."
A bead of cold sweat rolled down the back of Izuno's neck. His eyes darted frantically left and right as panic flared in his chest. Oh God, I am so terrible at lying, he screamed internally.
One of the guards narrowed his eyes, stepping forward. "Hey. Talk. On whose authority?"
Izuno’s mind raced at a million miles an hour. He threw out the first thing that sounded convincing. "The boss's authority."
"The boss?" The guard frowned. "Which boss?"
Izuno let out an exasperated sigh, dripping with manufactured annoyance. "Are you serious? Exactly how many bosses do you think run this territory?"
The guard paused, scratching his head as he tried to calculate. "Well, come to think of it, there are a few squad leaders"
"The main boss, you idiots!" Izuno snapped, intentionally raising his voice to cut him off and assert dominance.
The guard's eyes widened in sudden realization. "Oh! You mean Boss Harumachi? Well, why didn't you just say that from the start? Go ahead, pick your subject."
Faking a final huff of frustration, Izuno walked past them and approached the group of new recruits sitting cross-legged on the cold stone. His eyes swept over the cluster until they landed on a familiar chubby figure.
Izuno pointed straight at him. "You there. The kid with the headphones."
Bobo blinked, pointing a finger at his own chest in disbelief. "Me?"
Izuno gave a sharp nod, curling his finger to motion him forward. "Yeah, you. Get up and come with me."
Bobo scrambled to his feet, hurrying over as the diversion clicked into motion.

Up on the dark balcony....
Kairo watched the scene unfold below with a bright, relieved grin. "Oh man... he's actually pulling it off."
Beside him, Benji froze. His eyes blew wide open, staring down at the chamber floor like he was looking straight at a ghost. The color drained from his face as a cold sweat broke out on his skin. "Oh, no..."
Kairo snapped his head around, frowning in confusion. "What? What happened?"
With a trembling finger, Benji pointed down toward the side door, his mind instantly racing back to their recent past.
Kairo followed the vector of Benji's finger and the triumphant smirk vanished from his face, replaced instantly by the exact same mask of pure terror.
"It's... it's one of the guys from Izuno's squad," Benji whispered, his voice shaking. It was one of the very same guys Kairo and his group had ambushed, bound tightly to a tree, and abandoned in the woods before dragging Izuno into the territory.
Kairo’s eyes widened in absolute shock. "Wha... What is he doing here?!"
"This is bad," Benji muttered, panic gripping his chest. "Our cover is completely blown."

Down on the stone floor...
Izuno turned on his heel, guiding Bobo by the shoulder toward the comforting cloak of the shadows where their escape route waited.
Just as he took his first step, movement flickered out of the corner of his eye.
Izuno whipped his head toward the side door. The breath instantly caught in his throat, his heart violently hammering against his ribs as his entire body froze dead in his tracks.
