Thick, suffocating dust blanketed the trembling cavern as massive boulders plummeted from the vault above, shattering against the bedrock. Tucked into the shadowed recess of the escape tunnel, Benji stood anchored with Yomi securely bound to his back.
His heart hammered frantically against his ribs as he scanned the hazy ruins, his eyes darting through the falling debris. At his feet, a low, pained groan rattled from Kairo’s throat, the unconscious boy shifting weakly against the shuddering stone.
The heavy tension lines on his face dissolved as two figures materialized out of the haze. Sticking close to the wall to avoid the falling rock, Toka emerged into the clearing, supporting Tera by the shoulder as she kept her head bowed, her vacant eyes glued to the floor.
"You guys!" Benji cried out as they closed the distance.
Toka released his hold on her as they reached the tunnel threshold. "We don't have much time. Is everything ready?"
"Yes... yes," Benji stammered, holding out a thick coil of heavy rope.
"Alright. You hold onto this and tie it tight," Toka instructed, handing a section of the rope to Tera. She took it with trembling hands, still refusing to look up. "This line is anchored to the others waiting on the other side. It'll guide us."
Toka crouched beside Kairo, hauling the boy onto his own back and securing the binding around his waist. He checked the slack connecting them all. "I'll take the rear. Benji, you take point. Tera, you're in the center."
In a tight, single-file formation, they hurried deeper into the narrow tunnel just as a violent tremor racked the monument behind them.
"What's this...? My feet are freezing," Toka thought the instant his boots touched the threshold. "I knew this path would intersect with a subterranean water passage, and if the route is accurate, the line will lead us straight to the others... But still..."
A deafening, structural crack reverberated through the passage. The foundation of the chamber gave its final, agonizing groan. Toka threw a glance over his shoulder. The tunnel entrance was actively caving in, a massive wall of dust and shattered rock surging down the corridor toward them.
"This is not good," Toka barked. "Hey Benji, walk faster!"
Benji instinctively started to turn his head to look back.
"Don't look back! Just keep the pace!" Toka yelled.
The earth convulsed violently beneath their boots. A concussive blast of wind, driven by the collapsing tonnes of rock behind them, slammed into their backs.
Benji let out a terrified yell as his boots lost their purchase on the slick, algae-coated stone. He hit the ground hard, the weight of Yomi pulling his momentum downward. As Benji slid, the taut rope violently yanked Tera, and then Toka, off their feet.
The tunnel floor angled sharply into a steep, plummeting slope. Ice-cold water surged from beneath the rock, flooding the decline as they accelerated into the blackness.
"Benji, hold onto the rope! Don't lose your center!" Toka screamed over the rushing current, holding Kairo tight as they careened through the dark chute.
Through the roaring darkness, Toka’s eyes caught the terrifying sight of the tunnel branching out into multiple submerged arteries. The rushing water split in different directions, but the tension of the anchored rope violently jerked their trajectory, steering them true.
The water grew thicker and deeper, swallowing them chest-high in the freezing current as their speed doubled.
Then, a piercing sliver of natural sunlight broke through the absolute dark far ahead.
"Heeey.... Everyone!" Benji screamed, his eyes widening at the blinding glow. "Hang on tight!"
The deafening roar of the collapsing ruins reached a terrifying crescendo just as the confined darkness shattered.
They shot violently out of the mouth of the subterranean chute, bursting into the blinding daylight. For one breathless, weightless second, they hung suspended in the open air. Then, gravity reclaimed them, and they plunged downward, splashing heavily into the freezing, open expanse of a vast seawater basin.
As they broke the surface, gasping for air, the claustrophobic roar of the dying cave was instantly swallowed by the vast, quiet serenity of the natural open sky.
Blinding white cotton met his eyes as the haze slowly began to clear.
A low, rasping rumble escaped Kairo's throat as he blinked against the pale light filtering through the canopy above. He attempted to raise his head, but a sharp, burning strain shot through his temples, forcing him to clench his jaw and press a palm against his skull.
"Hmm...?"
He lowered his hand, staring at the thick, sterile bandages swathing his forearm. Looking down at his other arm, and then toward his legs, he found himself almost entirely bound in white linen.
The heavy canvas flap at the front of the tent slid open, letting in a draft of fresh, salt-tinged air.
"Oh, hey... you're finally awake?"
Kairo squinted into the bright opening, his vision still swimming. "Izuno...? Is... is that you?"
Izuno scratched the back of his neck, a familiar, cheeky grin spreading across his face. Before he could speak, another head poked through the opening.
"Hey, you're awake!" Benji's face lit up, his fingers automatically reaching up to adjust the bridge of his glasses as he stepped fully inside.
"Oh... hey, Benji," Kairo rasped, his voice rough. "Where is... where is everyone?"
"Oh, man! You won't believe it," Benji said, his posture relaxing. "A lot happened while you were out cold."
Kairo remained still, his heavy, tired eyes fixed on the two figures standing near the cot. He took a slow breath, assessing the dull ache in his limbs, before gradually shifting his weight to push himself upright.

"Wait, I'll go call the others" Benji cut himself off, his eyes widening as he noticed Kairo moving. "Hey, hold on! What are you doing? You're still recovering!"
"My muscles are responding," Kairo murmured softly. He extended his left arm, slowly opening and closing his flexed fingers. "See? Don't worry. I'm good to go."
He offered a gentle, reassuring smile, though the pale strain on his face betrayed him. Benji offered a faint, awkward smile in return, shaking his head in mild disbelief.
"Come on, this way..." Izuno gestured toward the open air outside, tilting his head toward the campsite.
Kairo took a step forward, his bare feet pressing against the cool earth as Benji trailed closely behind. Stepping past the tent flap into the brilliant sunlight, a sudden, crisp breeze rolled in from the nearby coast, carrying the distinct, sharp scent of saltwater directly to his nose.
He paused, shielding his eyes as he took in his surroundings. They stood in a small forest clearing nestled tightly beneath towering, ancient trees. Scattered across the shaded clearing floor were a handful of makeshift canvas tents, smoke rising lazily from a few small campfires.
"Wh-what is this place?" Kairo asked, his gaze sweeping across the camp. "What happened here?"
"It's a long story," Benji said, stepping up alongside him. "Come on, we better let the others know you're awake."
They moved down the central dirt path. Kairo kept his head turned, taking in dozens of unfamiliar faces. Some participants milled quietly between the shelters, while others crouched in silence around the crackling fires with downcast faces
"They were all part of the West Territory," Izuno noted over his shoulder as he led the way.
Kairo’s eyes snapped toward him. "The West Territory? But what happened to it? Why is everyone out here?"
"It collapsed," Benji answered quietly from behind. "It was... devastating, to say the least."
Kairo stopped briefly, his face pale with disbelief as he looked back at Benji.
"It was a complete disaster," Benji continued, his voice heavy. "But we all pulled through by working together. The medical supplies we have now are all thanks to the group that managed to secure the infirmary section before the whole place came down."
Izuno glanced back over his shoulder, offering a small, lighthearted grin to break the tension. "There are food supplies now too, if you're feeling up to it."
"Come on, we're almost there," Izuno said, picking up his pace.
They walked through the remainder of the clearing until they came to a stop in front of the canvas tent set up beneath the shade of a wide oak.
"We're coming in!" Izuno called out toward the entrance.
"Oh, come on in!" a girl's voice answered from within.
Izuno ducked his head, flipping the tent flap aside. Kairo stooped low to step inside behind him. His eyes widened the moment his gaze landed on a heavily bandaged boy sitting upright on a makeshift mattress.
"Huh? Bobo...?" The name escaped Kairo's lips in a stunned whisper.
The boy on the mattress blinked, his jaw dropping. "Kairo...?"
"Bobo!"
"Kairo!"
A heavy wave of raw relief broke through their voices as Kairo rushed forward. Both boys extended their bandaged arms for a fierce, celebratory embrace, only for the sudden, brutal muscle strain to violently check their momentum.
"Ouch!"
"Ouch!"
They froze mid-air, their arms hanging awkwardly as they winced against the sharp, pulling pain in their shoulders. For a second, a heavy silence filled the tent as they stared at each other’s pained expressions. Then, a sudden, booming burst of laughter erupted between them both.
"Oh, man!" Kairo wheezed, his arm still suspended. "I thought I'd never see your ugly face again!"
"Hey, don't say that!" Bobo grinned. "You're hurting my feelings."
They looked at each other again and dissolved into another round of laughter.
Benji and Izuno watched the reunion from the doorway with hopeful smiles softening their worn faces.
"I'll be outside...." the girl said softly, rising from where she had been tending to Bobo's bandages. "Just let me know if you need anything."
Kairo's eyes traced her path as she ducked out of the tent.
The second the flap fell shut, Bobo leaned in, nudging Kairo’s shoulder with his own. "Hey Kairo... you won't believe it, but the girls here are super cute!"
Kairo tilted his head. "Hmm?"
"I know, right?!" Bobo grinned wider. "First time I opened my eyes; I saw her staring down at me. I thought this must be heaven! But then again I told myself, if this was really heaven, then it could be my reward for all the efforts I’ve put in over the years."
Izuno stared at him with the deadpan expression. "Man... what is he blabbing about?"
"Heh... leave him be," Benji chuckled softly, settling against the tent post. "He needs this."
Bobo paused, his grin fading slightly as he noticed the sudden shadow crossing Kairo’s face. "Hey, Kairo... you, okay?"
"Hmm? Yeah... I'm okay," he murmured, turning his gaze back toward Benji and Izuno. "You said the rest of them are waiting?"
Benji and Izuno exchanged a brief, meaningful glance before nodding in unison. "Ah, yes," Izuno said, standing up straight. "If you want... I'll take you to them."
"Kairo?" Bobo called out quietly from his cot as Kairo turned to follow.
Kairo pressed a hand against his own chest, his eyes quiet. "It's just... for some reason, I feel kinda heavy inside."
He gave Bobo a reassuring nod. "I'm just glad you're okay. Wait here, I'll be back soon."
He stepped out into the daylight, with Izuno and Benji clearing a path ahead. Bobo sat back on his mattress, watching their shadows disappear through the canvas.
"Hey, princess.... you still there?!" Bobo called out toward the outside, craning his neck toward the flap. "Hey... prince-ss? Ah, damn it, my neck still hurts!" He winced, clutching his bandaged neck as the strain caught him once again.
