They remained locked in an embrace at the center of the hall, kneeling amid the wild static as tiny particles of lightning sparked straight through the agonizing wound in her chest.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Benji screamed from the corner, tears streaming down his soot-covered face, his voice a raw mixture of terror and disbelief. "GET OUT OF THERE! YOMI, GET OUT OF THERE!"
Cindy stretched her arm out from behind the rubble, her voice breaking into hysterical sobs as the cavern cracked and groaned around them.
Yomi clung to Kairo firmly, her features twisting in agony. The pressure radiating from his body was suffocating, yet she held on.
"The pain... in your heart..." she rasped, her voice trembling violently against his ear. "I... I..."
The deafening roar of the lightning faded into a distant, muffled echo. Beneath her eyelids, the crumbling monument dissolved, replaced by the sterile, shadowed hallways of the academy.
She wasn't in the cavern anymore. She was twelve again, cornered against the wall of the academy.
She could hear the sharp, condescending accusations of her classmates ringing in her ears, feel the oppressive weight of their glances as they shifted every failure onto her shoulders.
She remembered the burning lump in her throat, the paralyzing inability to speak up, to defend herself, to exist as anything more than a ghost in their shadow.
She remembered the quiet, bitter self-loathing that ate away at her every time she looked in a mirror, trapped inside the prison of her own silence.
She knew that exact darkness. She knew what it was to bleed internally while the world moved on around you.
The phantom memory shattered, snapping back to the searing heat of Kairo's unstable aura.
"I feel... the weight in your chest," Yomi whispered weakly.
A heavy cough of blood spilled past her lips, trickling over Kairo’s shoulder and running down his back.
"Your heartbeat... it races right through mine... Please... Kairo"
Her round glasses, slicked with the raining sweat, slowly slipped from her face, shattering on the stone floor below.
"...come back to us. You're... you're not alone anymore."
With those final words, the blinding web of electricity whipping through the hall began to lose its lethal edge. The volatile pressure grinding against the cavern floor gradually slowed, the violent discharges turning into faint, dying sparks.
Kairo gritted his teeth, his pupil-less, pale eyes flickering as he forced his eyelids to slowly fall shut.
The suffocating atmosphere around his body seized, the wild lightning webs dissolving into thin air until only the faint hum of settling dust remained.
High up in the corner, the group stared in stunned realization.
"Look..." Benji breathed, his voice barely a whisper. "She... she's doing it."
Silence settled over the chamber as the temperature began to return to normal. The cracked stone pillars supporting the monument groaned under the quiet weight of the subterranean vault, showering fine dust down into the center of the hall, where two figures remained kneeling in the fading light.
Kairo's eyes closed as the wild static died away completely. His face went entirely blank, his body going limp as consciousness slipped from his grasp. His head slumped forward, coming to rest heavy against Yomi’s shoulder as she held him tight, her own breathing growing shallow and slow. Fleeting wave of relief washed over the ruined chamber.
For a single fraction of a second, it felt as though the nightmare was finally over.
Then a shadowed, dust-caked figure plummeted from the ruined vault, landing with a heavy, bone-rattling thud on the stone floor directly behind Yomi’s kneeling frame.
Before anyone in the corner could even gasp, the figure’s arm lashed out in a single, brutal whip of movement.
A violent strike cracked across the back of Yomi’s head with a sickening, reverberating impact that echoed off every cracked pillar in the cavern. The force snapped her body sideways, launching her like a ragdoll into a hanging, shattered column. Stone gave way, and her unmoving form crumpled into the rubble.
"YOMI, NO!
Cindy shrieked, tears blinding her as she lunged forward, reaching desperately into the open air. Benji seized her around the waist, hauling her back by force as the remaining group trembled in utter horror. Toka stood frozen, his jaw tight and his eyes locked on the space where Yomi had just been kneeling.
"Well, well, now..." A voice cut through the lingering dust. The figure casually shook out his right hand, rolling his wrist before turning his gaze down to Kairo’s limp body as it collapsed flat against the stone. "That was quite the show."
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
"Haramuci..." Benji growled through his teeth, his arms still pinned around the sobbing Cindy.
Toka’s sharp eyes narrowed into a cold glare. "So that's Haramuci."
Haramuci tilted his head back, his eyes rolling lazily toward the corner. "Huh?"
He looked around the crumbling, dust-filled monument, throwing his hands out in exaggerated, theatrical agitation. "My goodness, look at what you’ve done to my little palace. Haven't you done enough already, eh, Kairo?" Reaching down, he unceremoniously seized a handful of Kairo’s dark hair, yanking his head up from the dirt.
"Let him go!" Cindy sobbed, her voice raw and breaking. "Let him go already! Can't you see he's not responding?!"
"What?" Haramuci snapped his head toward her, his arrogant composure twisting into a flash of sharp irritation.
"Hey," Toka called out, his voice dropping into a dangerous, commanding register. "You heard the girl. Let him go."
Toka stepped out from behind the rubble, leaving the safety of the perimeter to walk cleanly into the open center of the chamber.
Haramuci’s eyes tracked Toka's deliberate stride, a slow, dark grin creeping across his face. He released his grip, letting Kairo’s face hit the cold stone with a dull smack. "Oh... look who show up... so you're the friend we've been expecting, and..."
Snapping his head towards the two remaining participants with the group by the corner. "Looks like you've stolen all my subjects, too."
Toka let out a quiet, harsh hiss between his teeth.
"Trust me when I say this..." Haramuci purred, his voice dropping an octave as his eyes gleamed with malice. "You and your little pals are gaonna pay for ruining my castle."
He paused, tilting his head back toward the elevated court. "Tera? Hey, Tera! Come out already it's safe now."
Toka’s breath hitched.
From beneath the shadows of a massive boulder wedged behind the stone throne, a silhouette emerged. Tera stepped into the dim light, her head hung low, her eyes fixed firmly on the ground as she walked up to stand behind Haramuci.
Haramuci leaned back, relishing every drop of disbelief written across Toka’s face.
Cindy’s tear-stained face tightened with disbelief. "Tera!"
She glared directly at Haramuci, her voice shaking with rage. "What are you doing with her?! Let her go!"
Haramuci tilted his head, letting out a mocking hum. "Oooh? Let her go? But she was never part of your team to begin with."
Toka’s sharp gaze remained locked on the man ahead. "What are you talking about?"
"Looks like you're a little late to the party," Haramuci sneered.
From the corner, Benji called out, his voice thick with bitterness. "She's a traitor, you guys! She's been working with the enemy from the very start!"
"What...?" Cindy breathed, her head snapping toward Tera.
She searched Tera's face for any sign of denial, but Tera stood completely frozen, her features hardened into a blank, emotionless mask that betrayed nothing of what she was feeling inside.
Haramuci chuckled dismissively. "Oh, come on, no need to look so startled." His grin faded, his eyes turning cold and sharp. “Besides… I’d be more concerned about whether any of you are making it out of here alive.”
Toka’s expression hardened, his breathing remaining calm despite the crushing atmosphere in the room. Without breaking eye contact with Haramuci, he spoke quietly over his shoulder.
"Hey, Benji."
Benji snapped his head toward him.
"Go check on Yomi and make sure she's still breathing," Toka commanded. "While the rest of you..." He gestured toward Cindy and the remaining participants crouching near the wall. "...get out of here."
Cindy’s eyes widened. "What about Tera?!"
Toka dropped low, bringing his hands up into a fluid combat stance. "I don't make room for traitors."
Haramuci raised an eyebrow. "Mmm? Aren't you forgetting your little friend here?" He casually planted his heavy boot on top of Kairo’s unconscious frame.
A faint, calm smile tugged at the corner of Toka’s mouth. "Oh, don't worry. Kairo’s coming with me too."
Haramuci burst into a loud, mocking laugh. "AHAHAHA! What, you think I'm just going to sit back and watch?!"
Toka’s smile vanished instantly, his muscles coiling like steel springs as he locked into his stance.
Sensing the shift, Haramuci tossed his head back toward Tera without looking. "Stand back. I'll call you if I need you."
Tera complied silently, taking several slow steps backward into the shadows of the stone throne. Cindy watched her in stunned silence, completely speechless at her compliance.
"Cindy!" Toka’s sharp voice barked, cutting through her shock.
She turned back to him, her throat tight. "We're... we're waiting for you," she whispered.
With one last look, Cindy and the last remaining participants ducked low, slipping into the narrow breach in the stone to make their escape.
Behind them, Benji remained standing near the rubble, his eyes fixed entirely on Toka, waiting for the exact split second to make his move toward Yomi.
