The darkness hadn't been a pit. It was a throat.
The fall was a blur of crushing air and terminal velocity, ending not in a bone-shattering thud, but in a violent, cold plunge. The water was icy—stinging like needles against Kairo’s skin.
He thrashed, his lungs burning for air, until he broke the surface and clawed his way onto the slick, moss-covered stone at the edge of a subterranean spring.
The cavern was vast, illuminated only by the faint, bioluminescent glow of rare fungi clinging to the stalactites above. The sound of water was constant—a low, rhythmic rushing that echoed against the obsidian walls.
Kairo gasped, his chest heaving, his clothes clinging to his frame like a second, freezing skin. He dragged himself toward the heap of limbs lying a few feet away.
"Benji!"
He reached the boy and flipped him over. Benji’s skin was deathly pale. Kairo pressed two fingers to his neck, his heart hammering against his ribs. Pulse. Faint, but there.
Kairo began to shake his movements frantic. "Benji! …hey Benji… wake up”
Water gurgled in throat. His body spasmed, and he lurched onto his side, coughing violently as a stream of spring water cascaded from his mouth. His lungs rattled, fighting to pull in the damp, heavy air.
Kairo let out a breath he felt he’d been holding since the tunnel collapsed, his shoulders slumping as he sat back on his heels.
Benji’s eyelids fluttered, struggling to focus on the dim, blue-tinted light. He groaned, a pathetic, wavering sound, and squinted up at the ceiling, his hands clutching at the wet stone beneath him as if trying to ground himself.
"Kairo?" Benji’s voice was barely a whisper, ragged and thin. He blinked, the water still dripping from his lashes, his eyes searching the darkness. He looked at his own trembling hands, then back at Kairo, his mind struggling to bridge the gap between the tunnel and this silent, echoing grotto.
"Kairo..." he wheezed, his chest still rising and falling in sharp, painful hitches. "Are... are we still alive?"
Kairo let out a sharp, incredulous laugh that echoed off the cavern walls. He ran a hand through his dripping hair, a look of profound, exhausted relief washing over his face. He leaned in, his eyes bright with the sudden, overwhelming joy of seeing his friend breathe.
"Yeah, Benji," Kairo said, his voice dropping into a soft, steady rhythm. "We're alive. Somehow..."
Kairo stared at the dark water, jaw tight. He refused to believe Izuno had set them up…. it had to be pure coincidence. But the thought only deepened his despair. Back at square one, they were trapped miles beneath the earth.
Beside him, Benji waded over to a familiar glint by the spring, scooped up his glasses, and slipped them on. The world snapped back into focus.
"Come on Benji," he said, his voice steadying. "Let's find a way out."
They pushed deeper into the multi-layered maze. Kairo’s frustration boiled; he had faced the wild, but being buried alive in a suffocating cave was entirely new. He rubbed his temples, completely lost.
Benji stepped ahead, adjusted his frames, and turned back with sudden authority.
"In this kind of situation, panicking compromises our analytical faculties," Benji said, stepping to the front to take the lead. "Loss of composure is a fatal variable."
Kairo blinked, dumbfounded. "What are you doing?"
Benji straightened himself, seizing his moment to finally be useful. "I've read books on speleology."
Kairo furrowed his brow. "Speleology? What's that?"
Benji turned around, adjusting his glasses with an air of absolute confidence. "It’s the scientific study of caves. I know the exploratory guidelines, structural indicators, and safety precautions for when you're trapped underground. These layers all connect somewhere."
Without waiting for a reply, Benji took the front, charting a path through the winding, damp rock, determined to lead them back to the upper tunnels.

Moments later....
The passage narrowed into a jagged throat of stone, forcing them shoulder-to-shoulder as they pressed deeper into the labyrinth.
Every step grew heavier, Kairo’s boots dragging like lead weights against the damp floor. The exhaustion was a physical crushing force.
"Hey, Benji..." Kairo panted, his voice tight with rising anxiety.
Benji kept his eyes locked straight ahead, his posture rigid. "Stay calm. We're on the right vector."
Then, a fracture in the dark.
A pale, ethereal beam of daylight cut through the suffocating gloom ahead. Benji froze, his breath catching before a breathless grin broke across his face.
"Look!" he exclaimed, pointing upward. "We're close!"
They scrambled to the base of the fissure and dropped flat, clawing their way upward on hands and knees. Loose rubble and small stones rained down as they shoved frantically against the debris. Suddenly, a rush of crisp, oxygen-rich air surged through the gap, cool and sharp against their sweat-soaked skin.
It was a sudden, violent rush of pure hope—the distinct ventilation current of the upper underground layer.
"See?" Benji said, looking back with a bright, triumphant smile. "I told you."
Kairo exhaled a long, shuddering breath of profound relief, a ghost of a smile touching his lips as they broke through into the upper tunnels, back on track to trace the path toward the West Territory.
Moments later...
They emerged from the narrow squeeze, standing up straight as they found themselves on a natural stone walkway leading toward their goal.
As they walked in silence down the cavern path, Benji cleared his throat. "Hey, Kairo?"
Kairo kept his eyes forward, watching Benji's back as the other boy led the way. "Yeah?"
"Say…. Are you and Tera… close?"
Kairo frowned, glancing at the back of Benji's head. "Close? We just met in this survival test. Although I do remember her mentioning wanting to reunite with her team, but I haven't heard her talk about it since. There's nothing between us."
Benji let out an audible sigh of relief. "Oh. I see."
Kairo raised an eyebrow, genuinely bewildered. "Why are you asking about her in the middle of an underground cave?"
Benji rubbed the back of his neck, offering a sheepish, awkward smile over his shoulder. "Well, you see... I think i kind of have a thing for her. Wanted to clear the air between us before i made a move…. I don’t know how this survival test gonna turn out… I think I’m gonna tell her how i feel, even if I've never done anything like this before."
Kairo stared at him with deadpan disbelief. "How you feel? You've only known her less than five hours ago."
Benji flushed, running a hand through his hair with an uneasy grin. "Come on, man. Haven't you ever heard of love at first sight?"
"Love.... at what now? Kairo said flatly, trying to understand him. He gave Benji a sidelong look. "Good luck with that, though."
Benji gave him a nod with a sheepish awkward smile
Kairo turned his gaze back to the dark path ahead. Everyone had their own priorities here; his was simply to find his friends and reunite with them before this test tore them apart.
................................
A sudden disturbance shattered the steady drip of the cave. Muffled voices—not one, but several—echoed up the stone corridor.
They stalked the sound to a dead end where the chatter vibrated thickly through the rock face. Searching the sheer wall, Kairo spotted a jagged fracture near the ceiling, the source of the noise.
Kairo scaled the jagged ledges first, then planted his boots, reaching down to haul Benji up to the upper threshold. Pressing themselves flat against the high stone, they peered through the shattered breach.
Below them lay a sprawling subterranean chamber. Five of Harumachi’s crews stalked the perimeter like wardens, their crude metal weapons gleaming in the dim light—some gripping wicked kukris, others hefting heavy crowbars and pickaxes. Below them stood a disciplined, uniform line of other survival test participants, being systematically organized and processed by Harumachi's crew.
Benji’s eyes widened behind his lenses. He gasped softly, pulling back just enough to whisper, "Those are other participants... they must be coming to join Harumachi’s team."
Kairo frowned, glancing sideways at him. "Join? What do you mean?"
"Before your group found us," Benji whispered back, "Cindy and I were already approached by them. They were recruiting for Harumachi to lock down the West Territory."
Kairo turned his gaze back to the breach, a cold realization settling in. This must be what Izuno meant. Harumachi wasn't just surviving the test; he was building an army out of participants to conquer the remaining regional territories.
Kairo scanned the grim, silent line of recruits below. Suddenly, his breath caught.
Among the participants standing in line, stood a familiar figure face; A chubby boy with a low-haircut and a tiny headset resting around his neck. Kairo blinked hard, staring down through the dust motes to make sure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him.
"Bobo...?" Kairo muttered, the name slipping out in a breathless shock. “Can’t be! … that’s….”
It was him. The exact person he had been searching for since entering the West Region, the key to their plan was to secure the map and reunite with the others in the North Region. Seeing him standing there in Harumachi's processing line made Kairo's chest tighten with a heavy, suffocating dread, yet a profound, breathless wave of relief washed over him just as quickly.
