The forest swallowed the road.
Rain had stopped hours ago, yet every branch still dripped with yesterday's storm.
Ren followed several steps behind Kaito.
Neither of them had spoken since leaving Aokawa.
The silence wasn't uncomfortable.
It was... deliberate.
Like Kaito only spoke when words were worth carrying.
---
By sunset...
They reached an old stone bridge.
Half of it had collapsed into the river below.
Moss covered every inch of its surface.
At its center stood a weathered stone statue.
A warrior.
His face had long since eroded away.
Only the sword remained.
Broken.
Ren stopped.
"...Who was he?"
Kaito looked at the statue for a long moment.
"No one."
Ren frowned.
"What do you mean?"

Kaito walked past it.
"He gave up his name."
"So history did the same."
---
They continued.
As night settled over the mountains...
Kaito finally spoke again.
"You asked why Crimson wanted your sword."
Ren immediately looked up.
"...Yeah."
Kaito nodded.
"What your father left you..."
"...isn't a weapon."
"It never was."
"It's a Foundation Key."
Ren remembered the broken guard.
"The seal..."
Kaito nodded once.
"There are seven."
"Each one anchors a realm where a Calamity sleeps."
"If even one is destroyed..."
"The prison weakens."
"If all seven fall..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.
---
Ren's voice was quiet.
"...Why didn't my father tell me any of this?"
Kaito smiled sadly.
"Because your father wanted you to live as a son."
"...Not as a Guardian."
---
The path narrowed.
Ancient torii gates stood ahead.
Most had fallen.
Others leaned at impossible angles.
Nature had nearly reclaimed them.
Ren noticed strange carvings on the stone.
Seven circles.
One at the center.
Six surrounding it.
"...What are those?"
Kaito stopped.
"The First Oath."
Ren stepped closer.
The carving was worn, but the words beneath it remained.
> 'Should history forget us... let our duty remain.'
---
Kaito placed a hand on the stone.
"The Seven Guardians carved this before the final campaign."
"They knew no one would remember them."
Ren blinked.
"...Seven?"
Kaito slowly looked toward the mountains.
"There were eight."
Silence.
"...Eight?"
Kaito nodded.
"The man history remembers..."
"...was never meant to stand alone."
---
Ren's heart pounded.
"...The Silent Blade."
Kaito closed his eyes.
For the first time...
His expression hardened.
"Don't worship him."
"...But don't hate him either."
Ren frowned.
"You knew him."
"I fought beside him."
A long pause.
"And against him."
---
Before Ren could ask another question—
Something whistled through the air.
THUNK!
A spear buried itself into the tree beside Ren's head.
So close that bark sprayed across his face.
Ren jumped back.
"What the—?!"
A voice echoed from above.
"...Missed."
Another voice.
"...No."
"I was aiming for the tree."
Ren looked up.
A figure sat casually on a torii gate, swinging one leg like she had been waiting there all day.
Wild dark hair tied back carelessly.
Travel-worn clothes.
A long spear resting across her shoulders.
She looked down at Ren...
Then at Kaito.
Then back at Ren.
She blinked.
"...Seriously?"
She pointed the spear directly at him.
"That's the kid?"
Kaito sighed.
"...Hana."
She hopped down effortlessly.
Walked a slow circle around Ren.
Looked him up and down.
"Hm."
She poked his shoulder with the butt of her spear.
"Too skinny."
Another poke.
"Walks too loud."
Another.
"And this haircut is a crime."
Ren slapped the spear away.
"...Who even are you?!"
She grinned.
"Hana."
"Future reason you don't die."
Then she pointed a thumb at herself proudly.
"You're welcome."
Ren stared.
"...I don't remember thanking you."
She laughed.
"Oh, I already like this one."
Kaito pinched the bridge of his nose.
"...Please."
"Don't encourage each other."
Hana threw an arm around Ren's shoulders before he could react.
"Too late."
She looked at him with a huge grin.
"C'mon, blacksmith."
"Let's see if you're actually worth all this trouble."
